Update: August 20, 2015
The Preschool is in the final stages of renovations necessary to finalize a 2-year lease extension for our current site. Major repairs to the building were completed this week by C & L Contracting, the firm hired by the Preschool, in accordance with the Scope of Work that was negotiated with the City of Ottawa. This work included reinforcements to the building's foundation, repairs to the roof, and number of other modest repairs.
We're Almost There!
There are a few remaining tasks that the Preschool must complete in order secure the lease extension with City of Ottawa and annual renewal of its license with the Ministry of Education.
Over the next 2-3 weeks, Blackburn Hamlet Preschool will be looking to its membership and the community for volunteers able to assist with outstanding minor repairs, yard work, painting, and cleaning, as well as to assist the teachers with unpacking and resetting the school to welcome students in September.
How You Can Help:
We need the help of as many volunteers as possible over the last two weeks of summer to be sure we can open our doors on time for the 2015-2016 Preschool Year. Specifically, we are looking for volunteers who can assist with:

Earlier this year, Blackburn Hamlet Preschool was forced to announce it would have to close its doors due to the termination of the lease on our building and the impossibility of finding a suitable alternate location within the given timeframe. The City of Ottawa cited the cost of maintaining and upgrading the building as the primary reason for terminating the lease. In June 2015, thanks to a tremendous show of support from the community for the Preschool, the City of Ottawa offered a two-year lease extension, provided certain repairs to the building are made by the Preschool.
The two-year lease extension is great news for the Preschool as it will allow us to continue to offer outstanding early learning programs for families in the community while working to find a new permanent location. However, there is a significant amount of work that the preschool must undertake this summer in order to ensure that the doors are open for September 2015. As a not-for-profit organization, Blackburn Hamlet Preschool has limited financial resources for major capital expenses, and will be relying as much as possible on volunteer hours, donated materials, and donations to minimize the costs of repairing the current building. If you would like to help, please see our Volunteer and Donate pages for more information, or contact us directly by email if you have materials or special services to offer.
Securing the lease extension is a critical step toward saving Blackburn Hamlet Preschool, providing much needed time for the organization to plan and fundraise for a new permanent home. The long-term future of the Preschool will depend on finding a new location and raising the funds needed to retrofit or construct a new building. The Preschool will be reaching out to the community over the next 12 months to assess needs, seek partnerships, identify opportunities, request help and raise funds. Individuals interested in working with us to renew Blackburn Hamlet Preschool for generations to come are welcome to contact us. We'd love to have you join our team of enthusiastic volunteers!
The Board of Directors is optimistic that with the continued support of the community the Preschool will be able to continue to serve families in the area for another 45 years.
