The Blackburn Hamlet Preschool is dedicated to providing a warm and stimulating environment for children 1.5 to 4 years old from September to June. Our programs allow children to explore and experiment while developing independence and a positive attitude toward school and learning. In our child-centred environment, activity centres are carefully planned to meet the developmental needs of every child. After all, every child has different needs, so staff are continuously planning distinctive activity centres for the toddlers and preschoolers.
Blackburn Hamlet Preschool has been a beloved part of east-end Ottawa for over 40 years. Our co-operative preschool is run by parents through an elected parent Board of Directors, the support of numerous volunteers, a program supervisor, and a staff of dedicated teachers. The board meets monthly to organize and maintain the school, and, when necessary, hire staff. Board and committee members’ co-operation is essential for the smooth running of the school.
Parents are an active part of the classroom with a member of the family, whether it be a parent or grandparent, helping in the classroom one day per month on a rotating schedule. Open communication between staff and families, and involvement in the school is always welcomed, appreciated, and encouraged.
Inside the School
The school features two large rooms for learning activities – a gross motor room and an art room. Within each room smaller areas are organized with various activities, with the materials and activities changing every one to two weeks.
Blackburn Hamlet Preschool believes in the value of outdoor play. Our school is situated in a quiet location next to trees, a park, and a baseball diamond. We have has a private, enclosed outdoor play-yard shaded by mature trees that is well-equipped with toys, play structures and riding equipment. Children in all programs enjoy supervised outdoor play every day throughout the school year, weather permitting.
